I almost feel I should thank the elusive and mysterious aliens for causing my obsession, which has led to a lifelong search for answers to many questions about them. When I have all those answers, I'll decide whether the aliens deserved to be thanked. At present, I'm undecided. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of people who have accompa- nied me to Pine Bush for research — far too many to name indi- vidually. But I collectively thank all who spent time with me. Whether the evenings were fantastically exciting or dull beyond boredom, I'm grateful for their support. Many residents of Pine Bush played important roles in this project, including some who were abducted by aliens and had terrifying experiences. To all of them, I offer my thanks for tol- erating my presence when it sometimes made things difficult and painful because of the emotional depth and power in the UFO experience. A number of my friends have been regulars at Pine Bush over the years. They have supported me emotionally, given me pub- licity, and in general acted on my behalf. I offer a heartfelt thank you to Eleanor Motichka, Cathy McCartney, Pick Rohrman, the Schapper family, Cindy Golas, and the Metaphysical Center of New Jersey. Robert Toto passed away in March, 1990. Bob lived next to Pine Bush. We met in 1986 and had some incredible sightings SILENT INVASION X together. He played a key role in bringing people to Pine Bush. To his wife and daughter, I say thank you. There are some to whom I'm especially grateful and who deserve special mention. Harry Lebelson, who was UFO editor at Omni magazine in 1980, first took me into Pine Bush. Sam Stecher, a physicist who worked with us during the early days of this field study likewise deserves acknowledgment. I also extend deep thanks to John White for his perseverance with the project until we got my story into print, and to my pub- lisher for believing in it. My parents, Beverley and Jesse Crystall, and my two sisters, Sandy and Lisa, have seen UFOs on occasions ranging from dis- tant viewing to close encounters. Although they never chased the ships as I have, they nevertheless hoped that my quest would lead me to the truth about UFOs. Last in line, but not in the depth of my feeling, I thank David De Lia, who sought me out for Pine Bush excursions after see- ing me on television. Although he began by thinking only of the UFO phenomenon, our friendship grew into encouragement, support, and devotion. For that alone, whatever else happens, I may end up thanking the aliens. FOREWORD Since 1982, thousands of people have sighted UFOs in the Hudson Valley of New York. These sightings range from strange lights in the night sky to close encounters in which witnesses got within one hundred feet of an object reported to have been metallic and the size of a football field. The sightings are documented in my book Night Siege: The Hudson Valley UFO Sightings, coauthored with Dr. J. Allen Hynek and Bob Pratt. Ellen Crystall's field research was carried out in the Pine Bush area of New York, which is located in the Hudson Valley and is very close to the center of this UFO activity. One of the greatest problems investigators face when dealing with the UFO phenomenon is the accuracy of what witnesses say happened. Their descriptions are subject to misperception and bias; their memories are fallible; their honesty may be sus- pect; their motives may be self-serving. The UFO investigators themselves may be suspect: Are they reporting their case truthfully? Are their data open to inspec- tion? Have they followed the protocols for empirical, objective investigation? Have they properly documented their findings? Have they submitted them for peer review? Have they estab- lished the credibility of their conclusions, no matter how incred- ible the subject under investigation? FOREWORD SILENT INVASION XIII XII leagues will come to be recognized as a solid contribution to our knowledge of the UFO experience and a clear call for recognis- ing publicly the scope of the challenge it represents. This foreword is primarily a tribute to an outstanding UFO researcher and fact finder. I know of none who is more dedicat- ed, trustworthy, and persevering than Ellen Crystall. Her work documenting UFO phenomena at Pine Bush was done in the field, meticulously collecting the evidence and gathering state- ments from witnesses. The result of her work, Silent Invasion, is an important contribution to ufological research. The UFO phenomenon, increasingly, is coming to the atten- tion of scientists, engineers, and other technically trained peo- ple. It is very important that researchers involved document their findings accurately. I feel that Ellen Crystall has done this well. At first, I was somewhat skeptical of the content of Silent Invasion, but as I read her manuscript, I found that a great deal of her research paralleled my own. We are both tracking the same elusive phenomenon in the Hudson Valley. To some, the incidents she reports may sound like science fiction, but I can affirm from my own independent investigation of UFO sight- ings there that the UFO activity in and around Pine Bush is real. Ellen Crystall calls for and demonstrates through her own experience as a UFO investigator the extreme value of paying attention to the many puzzling UFO reports that have taken place in the Hudson Valley. I feel that this activity has already been recognized in some high places in our government, but certainly not publicly. I leave you to ponder the issue. But about the existence of the UFO phenomenon at Pine Bush, New York, there seems to be little question. So many people from doctors and lawyers, police officers and scientists, to solid citizens from many walks of life, have had strange encounters there with something they considered not of this world that the phenomenon cannot be denied and should not be ignored. It is my feeling that the work of Ellen Crystall and her col- Philip Imbrogno, M.S.
