Skate 2 Guide It's been over a year since we last grinded the sunny street curbs of San Vanelona. But "New" San Van isn't the skate-topia it once was. Pools have been filled, hubbas have been capped, and an unhealthy infestation of rent-a-cops has befallen our beloved burg. Even familiar sites, like the breakneck hills of the Res and the stoic but skate-able office parks of downtown aren't the same as they once were. But the biggest change of all may be your status; you're no longer number one. It's time to change that. It will take more than a few rounds of SKATE with the pros to get back on top. Whether you're elbowing in on photo shoots for in Thrasher and The Skateboard Mag, or going for the gold on the SV Megaramp, you shouldn't have to go it alone. We're here to help you take back your title, and the streets of New San Van in the process. Inside this Skate 2 strategy guide, you'll find: BASICS // Some tips to get you rolling. CAREER // Magazine challenges made easy. It's time for your close-up! CONTESTS AND RACES // Trounce the competition and get sponsored. PRO CHALLENGES // How to outdo San Van's finest. BONUS CHALLENGES // But wait... there's more! Kill every Spot and clear your Challenge Map. Guide by: Samuel Claiborn ¨ 2008, IGN Entertainment, Inc. Page1 Skate 2 Basics Session Marker Your Session Marker, or 'SM' as we'll often refer to it, is an essential tool for failing bailers. You place it and can instantaneously warp back to it at any time instead of running around like a chicken with its head cut off -- on a skateboard. Use this to get that exact angle to kill a Spot, or to replay a Pro Challenge for the 500th time. Now you can even add objects to your SM so they don't move around while you try and skate them. More on that below. Getting Around In Skate 2 you can get off your board and hoof it. It's awkward, but it will make some challenges easier and make it much easier to turn around and stop. You can also hitch a ride on a car, by pressing the OBJECT GRAB BUTTON. They will speed up when you grab them, but still obey traffic signals. But you can avoid these base activities entirely with the help of your trusty Challenge Map. Here you can warp to -- you guessed it -- challenges, among other things. Certain spawn points are even unlocked by completing tasks. If you want, you can finish the game without ever pushing in between challenges. Not bad! You can also use your compass to navigate to important nearby spots, including challenges, discovered Spots and pools. ¨ 2009 IGN Entertainment, Inc. Page2 Objects Get off your board and you can push and pull certain skate-able objects to your heart's content. This includes picnic tables, park benches, half pipes and rails to grind. You'll need these for certain challenges, and we'll tell you when that is in our guide. You can stack objects by dragging them on top of each other. You can also add objects to your session marker to make them static. Finally, you can reset everything once you're done if you need a clean redo. Multipliers Points are doled out in a stingy manner in San Van. To get a 1.5x, 2x or 3x point multiplier going, you'll need to string together tricks. The easiest way to do this is to grind. We'll encourage you to grind just about everything in our guide, and it's best you learn how to do so most effectively. Grinding can be augmented by pulling off flip tricks as you grind, all of which then add up and make that multiplier possible. Often we'll tell you to use "fancy" flips, which is a term we made up because we don't know the proper skateboarding videogame lingo. By this we mean high-scoring flip tricks, like 360 flips and laser flips. Look these up in your trick guide -- they require tricky flicking of the RIGHT STICK. The other main way to get a multiplier going is to get big air. This mean you need to learn how to pump. Pumping means pressing RIGHT HAND GRAB / CROUCH BUTTON ( DO NOT USE THE LEFT STICK TO PUMP AS THE GAME ADVISES ) as you first come into contact with a sloped surface, or transition, and releasing it immediately. Your character will duck, then straighten, gaining an immense vertical speed boost in the process. Pumping means you don't need to push with your foot. Do this in half pipes for big air. ¨ 2009 IGN Entertainment, Inc. Page3 Sponsors You'll get truck, board, shoe and wheel sponsors over the course of your virtual skateboarding career. These allow you to wave the entrance fee for challenges, and give you more money for each challenge completed. You'll need to choose the equipment from your respective sponsors to get the sponsor benefits. You can get the wheel and truck sponsors by beating all of the Street and Tranny Contests. The Board sponsor comes when you complete the first Demo. Finally, the shoe sponsorship comes from beating all of the Thrasher coverage challenges. Services Three services will allow you to further enjoy San Van's supreme skateability. You must unlock these before using them. After that, pull out your phone with THE SESSION MARKER/CELL PHONE BUTTON and navigate to Services. These will cost you. Big Black, unlocked after the we Roll Large Skateboard Mag mission, will knock down security for a few minutes for $500. You have to activate him OUTSIDE of challenges. Sammy's pool draining service will run you $200 and is unlocked after you beat The Scene of the Crime, a Thrasher coverage mission. She can also drain fountains downtown. Mikey will remove the caps on rails and ledges for a fee of $200. Unlock him by completing the School's In challenge. When you get caught by security, they'll replace the caps. You can call Mikey repeatedly to remove them. ¨ 2009 IGN Entertainment, Inc.
