Probably likeworking in a chocolate factory, afterthe first few months of stuffing all you caninto your mouth, you reach a state of gracewith it and it becomes work. Great work butstill work.Over the years, I’ve been o ered more tat-toos than I care to mention—it would havebeen easy to say yes to all of them (and Iwould have long ago run out of interest usingthose rules) but that’s not how I work at all.For somebody who only owns twelve things,I try to treat all the ‘inanimate’ objects in mylife in the same way: figure out what’s impor-tant to you and leave the rest behind. The same mindset goes for my tattoos. With one exception which I must own as abad decision, everything I carry on board,I have wanted. Not wanted like a pair ofshoes in a whimsical sale, but really want-ed… like a £500 pair of boots that are stillcapable of taking me around the world inten years when all other inferior sale shoesare rotting in a landfill hole with other ill-thought out items. It’s been almost a year since I last got tat-tooed—I’m in no rush, I have my whole lifeto enjoy this process—and I wasn’t activelylooking to get tattooed again, but over aweekend at a show last year, I met an artistwhose work I loved (in my heart as opposedto professionally) and it was still calling tome as the weeks turned into months. We spoke a little more, I handed over myidea—which is the same idea as it alwaysis—and today, a sketch landed in my inboxand I got excited about getting tattooed allover again.Which made me question why it is, in aworld of transient, disposable crap, a tattoocan still hold as much magic nearly 30 yearsafter you got your first—and maybe thatquestion itself is the answer. Not once did I ever think it wasn’t magic, but you can get used to the magic in the wayyou would working backstage at a Kiss showCasi WorrallIN A WORLD OF TRANSIENT, DISPOSABLECRAP HOW IS A TATTOO ABLE TO HOLD ASMUCH MAGIC NEARLY 30 YEARS AFTERYOU GOT YOUR FIRST?for years on end. Fact is, the sketch took meby surprise. It exceeded my expectation ofwhat was to come and I’ve been behavinglike a small child who rummaged under thebed and discovered what he was getting forChristmas.By the time you have this page in yourhands, the work will be done and I will bethe sole owner of the magic. No photos willexist. No TV cameras or panel of judges arenecessary to validate it. I probably won’t evertalk about it again… but today, I figured it wasimportant to let you know that I feel exactlythe same way about my ink that you do aboutyours and I hope it never changes.S KI N D E E P M AG A ZI NE •3SION SMITH • EDITOReditor@skindeep.co.ukmrsionsmith@skindeep_ukskindeepmagCONTENTS62182418 AFTER HOURSWayne Simmons talks to his favouriteartists about the things they get up towhen the studio lights go down.
